I recently had the opportunity to play through Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, and I must say, it was a fascinating experience. While the game's trailers and initial reviews might lead you to believe it's a straightforward pirate adventure, I can confidently say that it's so much more than that. The game's true story is set in the year 2096, where the series' nefarious Templar-run company, Abstergo, has essentially conquered the future. The game follows an insurgent faction of Assassins and their plan to wake the population into revolutionary fervor by showing them the memories of 18th-century pirate Edward Kenway. What makes this particularly fascinating is the concept of an AI called Ego, which has found a way to alter genetic memories and create false ones. From my perspective, the game's meta-story is what truly sets it apart. It's a compelling narrative about the desperate people of 2096 and their connection to the main history portions of the game. The meta-story is told through unlockable text files, which offer a variety of perspectives on a world in crisis. Personally, I found the text files to be a refreshing change from the traditional game format, and I enjoyed the unordered delivery of the story. The game's pirate gameplay is also well-made and fun to play, with new missions and characters that add depth to Edward's story. However, I did find that some of the new content, such as the new epilogue for hunting down a pirate killer, over-complicates Kenway's character. Overall, I believe that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a tantalizing hint of where Ubisoft could go with a line of Assassin's Creed remakes. It's a great sign of what could be, and I look forward to seeing where the series goes from here.
